The Hobo Code

Curio is a journal that will look at intriguing pieces of visual design. This issue looks at the Hobo Code. The Hobo Code was predominantly written in chalk or charcoal, so I have reflected this by using only black and white for the main pages. A stick of chalk is provided, along with a black reverse to the tip ins, encouraging the reader to try the code themselves. All the symbols were drawn in chalk or charcoal and photographed to enhance the texture. The title was scrawled in a loose way to represent the high illiteracy rate among the Hobos of the 1930s and the code itself. A double sided poster shows all the symbols in the Hobo Code and works as a cover sleeve.
